procrastination

J's birthday was the first upon us and i thought i'd pimp the kladdkaka for the occasion. much as i may be a one trick pony, ganache and fresh raspberries really livened up a cake that everyone (except the birthday boy!) had tried before.

was looking forward to trying this recipe that rui ever so thoughtfully shared (thanks rui!) and while the cake looked a bit too complicated for my basic student kitchen, the ganache was a doozy. my terrible math also meant that i bought too much baking chocolate when converting grams to ounces (accidentally or otherwise) and having the surplus chocolate for dinner is not something i'm very proud of.

procrastination is the name of the game because baking > revision :) after a hugely satisfying pizza express dinner with my peer dad and his seminar group, i spent the rest of the night pretending i was martha stewart on a budget. no plates? no bother, improvise with tin foil. no whisk? work those biceps with spork. no wire rack for cooling? prop it on the window sill. cranky oven with opaque door? overcome with time and temperature precision. sloping final product that didn't quite reach the edge of the baking tray? drown the whole thing in ganache, and some. when all else fails - cross fingers and hope for the best!

if i may say so myself... the raspberries really cut through the sweetness of the cake, already tempered with the dark chocolate ganache. love the birthday candles that T scored us and the very surprised birthday boy deigned to have some cake before running off for a 90min gym session between lectures. such is the not-so-secret life of inter-varsity rowers.

plus the best thing about splitting cake with a group of (predominantly) girls is that they eat like birds and there's plenty for mE. no shame in eating 1/3 of the cake i baked. yep, am classy that way.
